How to Install Insulation
Reflective Insulation for all Seasons . . .
and a Variety of Reasons
| Residential

R+HEATSHIELD
installed over roof rafters reduces summer heat gain in the attic, resulting in
lower energy costs for this residence |
Commercial

ASTRO-FOIL
products are ideal for this commercial structure. The lightweight, versatile insulation
will reduce energy consumption and cut building costs. |
Industrial

ASTRO-FOIL
installed in this fabricating facility brightens the interior and reduces heat
loss. |
Agricultural

ASTRO-WHITE
was installed over the purlins in this horse barn, to increase animal comfort
during the hot summer months. |
HVAC

After wrapping ductwork with ASTRO-FOIL,
energy
costs are decreased by reducing the workload on
the furnace and the air-conditioning unit.

Floor Installation
The Best Choice for Insulating Below
Radiant Floor Heating Systems. Meets FHC 10/25 (ASTM E84-95) Class 1, Class A
- SUPER EFFICIENT... Reflects up to 97%
of the heat energy radiating downward.
- DURABLE...Thermal performance will not
degrade over time.
- CONSISTENT PERFORMANCE... Not affected
by moisture and humidity.
- SUPER-SAFE TO HANDLE... No special handling
or breathing protection required.
- PEACE OF MIND... No health concerns for
the homeowner, now or ever!
- EASY TO INSTALL... Lightweight, cuts
and staples easily.
- TOUGH... Extremely puncture and tear-resistant.
- ECONOMICAL... Less expensive to install,
last forever.
Installation Note:
Maintain a clearance of 3/4" or more between the ASTRO-FOIL surfaces and
heat tubes, subfloor or ceiling sheetrock.

Attic Installation
Butt insulation against chimney and friction fit around lighting fixtures,
exhaust fans, motors or vents extending into attic. Cover and/or butt insulation
against these objects only as manufacturer permits.

Eliminate cold spots by filling cracks around doors and window framing with
Astro-Foil. Bow in and staple or tape to wood.

Small punctures do not require Repair. Large rips or tears should be
patched with pressure-sensitive aluminum tape before installation of wall finishing.

To prevent condensation in the attic, it helps to keep air moving out through
eave vents, openings under the eaves, gable vents and roof vents. Provide
one square foot of free vent area for each 300 square feet of attic floor area.
PROPER INSTALLATION OF ASTRO-FOIL SHOULD NOT BLOCK PROPER VENTILATION.

Insulate pull-down stairways by stapling Astro-Foil to a built-up frame work.
Also staple on scuttle hole boards.

Butt ALL seams and tape with 2" wide pressure sensitive aluminum tape.
DO NOT USE DUCT TAPE. Make sure tape and insulation are clean, dry
and applied in an environment above 40`F. Tape only to seal seams.
Do not use to secure insulation itself. Apply tape over seams evenly
and use a wider width if necessary. Scrape a squeegee over the tape several
times to remove air pockets.

Roof Installation
New construction
1. Starting at one end of the roofing framework, measure the length across
the trusses, adding enough to allow hang at both ends. Cut the first piece and
lay in place.
2. Pull tight from both ends and attach to trusses and purlins using self-tapping
screws and washers or with pressure sensitive aluminum tape. DO NOT USE DUCT TAPE.
Follow taping instructions found on page 6. DO NOT USE MECHANICAL PULLERS TO TIGHTEN
INSULATION. It is natural for Astro-Foil to sag slightly. This will not be noticeable
from the inside of the building following installation.

3. Cut the second length, laying parallel to first. Make sure to butt or slightly
overlap edges. Tape ALL seams.

4. Roof sheeting can be applied in the conventional manner as soon as there
is sufficient insulation in place to accommodate sheeting width. When welding
the roof deck to the trusses and purlins through the Astro-Foil, it is suggested
that you use Astro-E for minimal effect on the weld.

An alternative taping approach is to combine it with the installation of the roofdecking.
After the first piece of insulation is installed, fold the open end back over
the top of the roof deck. Butt the second length of insulation to the edge and
tape. Then fold the second piece back over the roof trusses and continue to install
the deck.
Retrofit Applications
5. Measure the first length per Step #1. Secure to wall plate per Step #3 above,
or Step #2, Page 2. Pull tight and secure to roof truss and purlins per Step #2
above. Continue adding additional insulation starting from the wall plate, laying
parallel to prior piece. Tape all seems following recommended taping procedure.

Wall Installation
(New construction)
Astro-Foil can be installed in sidewalls, either running from the top wall plate
down to the foundation or running horizontally along the structure's frame, prior
to the installation of the metal sheeting.
1. Measure the length to be applied, then cut a similar length of Astro-Foil.
Add an inch or two to assure complete coverage at top and bottom.

2. Position first length at corner, wrapping around the corner pole edge and
fasten with self-tapping screws or with aluminum foil tape, sufficient to hold
in place.

3. Cut a second length and position next to the first length. Butt sides evenly
together or slightly overlap. Tape all seams.

4. When securing bottom, staple insulation to the sill plate or a furring strip
secured to the floor. To help reduce air infiltration, install Astro Sill SeaI(TM)
under the sill plate.

Basement Installation
Return Air Planning with Astro-Foil
Astro-Tabs
Use 16" wide ASTRO-FOIL when floor joists are on 16" centers and
24" ASTRO-FOIL for joists on 24" centers. For I-joists
on 16" centers use 17" wide ASTRO-FOIL. For double panning adjacent
cavities use 34" wide ASTRO-FOIL.

Slide ASTRO-FOIL up between floor joists and stale to the rim joist below the
register opening. If run begins away from the rim joists, bend a 1"
strip along the beginning edge of the ASTRO-FOIL and staple to sub floor.
Staple the tabs to the floor joists.
Bring the ASTRO-FOIL up with the TABS over the bottom face of the floor joists.
Staple every 2" - 3".
If preferred, the TABS can be bent down and the ASTRO-FOIL slid up 3/4"
between the floor joists. Staple every 2" - 3" to the bottom inside
of the joists.

Ductwork Installation
Installing Astro-Foil on Doors,
Ducts and Pipes
Astro-Foil goes wherever regular mass fiber and board insulation can . . .
and even places they can't.
Pipewrap (Use 1" wide strips of Astro-Foil secured around pipe every two
feet on center to create necessary air space).

Duct enclosures. Use two 1" wide strips of Astro-Foil or 1/2" wide polyethylene
foam stripping, secured around duct every two feet on center to create necessary
air space.

Loading dock and overhead doors (special coated Astro-Foil is available for these
applications).

Entry door insulation.
